Halloween - Outdoor Decorations for Your Home

 Outdoor Decorations for Your Home

When it is time to get the decorations ready for Halloween, you want to be sure that you have the right things to spruce up the outside of your home as well as the inside.  Here are some great ideas that could help to welcome or maybe frighten visitors who dare to come a calling.

Halloween Lights

There are lots of different lighting fixtures that you can choose to put up that will convey a real sense of Halloween.  A cheap and cheerful option is to get some string lights.  You can actually purchase a string of LED lights that are shaped in the form pumpkins, skulls and coffins.  All you need is to have a power source nearby and you can place these lights around your front door or windows.

Pumpkins on Display

Your Halloween decorations would not be complete without the presence of a fully carved pumpkin.  You can choose to buy whatever size you like but you must have a pumpkin on display complete with a candle or LED light fitting inside.  If you have the skills and you are quite artistic, you will be able to carve out a fantastic shape that people will really admire. If you think that your skills are a little lacking, you can still get the perfect looking pumpkin.  There are lots of books that give you step by step instructions on how create different designs.

A Skelton Standing Guard

A fun thing to have next to your door is a full size skeleton. This is something that is sure to make visitors pause for a second before they venture up to your door.  To make your skeleton look even more gruesome, you could buy some cobweb spray and apply it quite generously around the statue in order to give it a really ancient look.

A Flying Witch in the Window

As well as a skeleton standing guard, why not add to the fun by getting a model of a flying witch to act as his accomplice.  There are different types of models available. You can choose to buy a fairly modern day looking witch or opt for a really scary looking one made with a green face, reminiscent of the evil witch in the Judy Garland movie classic The Wizard of Oz.

Ghostly Sightings at the Window

A really quick and easy way to transform your windows is to use decals.  You can get these sorts of stickers in a variety of sizes and they will not ruin your windows when you are ready to remove them.  Great choices for Halloween include adding images of ghostly figures at your window.  This is something that will make people do a double take each time they pass your home.
Halloween is a fantastic excuse to have a little fun so why not go all out and decorate the whole of your home and embrace the season completely.

Halloween - Get The Candy Ready For The Trick or Treaters

The wonderful tradition of trick or treating is shared by both adults and children.  It is a time when you will open your front door and discover groups of children asking for treats. They will usually be dressed up in wonderful fancy dress costumes and will either have a little container or a bag where they can gather together the treats that they have collected from their very generous neighbours.
This tradition is based on an activity that dates back to the Middle Ages. It was called “Souling” and it was normally carried out by poor people who would go door to door begging for food.  In return they would offer to say prayers for the dead.

These days this activity is based much more on the idea of fun rather than the necessity to be fed.

What to Give Trick or Treaters
There are plenty of things that you can offer little visitors as they knock on your door. If you want to gain a good reputation with the kids in your neighbourhood, you will want to ensure that you provide some really good stuff.  This will normally mean an assortment of sugar loaded candies.  You could choose to offer up healthy treats like granola bars or fresh fruit but it certainly won’t be appreciated by the kids who could retaliate with some awful trick being played on you.

A good idea is to stock up on candy that is easy to hand out. The perfect solution would be to purchase chocolate bars in snack size portions.  Things like Snickers, Mar bars and Milky Way bars are good choices.

Hard candy is also a great option.  You can buy king size packs which will definitely go a long way.

Remember Health & Safety – Only Offer Wrapped Candy Goods

You will want to ensure that whatever you have on offer all the candies and chocolate bars or bon bons are provided in individual wrappers. If you have placed everything in one huge container, then allowing different children to stick their hands in to choose their own gifts could lead to an issue of hygiene.  In order to prevent any unfortunate little accidents or cross contamination, only provide wrapped treats.

The other benefit of offering up wrapped goodies is that if you end up with surplus stock at the end of the evening, you can still enjoy the treats yourself or keep them for another time.
So this Halloween, make sure that you are ready to receive visits from the cute little trick or treaters in your area.  To provide the best treats possible, order your stock in good time and have them ready and waiting at the door.

Halloween Decorations For Your Home

Get Some Great Halloween Decorations for Your Home

If you really love to get into the festive mood at Halloween it is very important that your home looks the part.  You can achieve this by using different elements to create the look and feel of a spooky mansion that you would normally see featured in Halloween movies.  You can choose to spend lots of money on decorations or you can actually create your own if you are the artistic type. Everyone knows exactly what to expect during this time of the year and you do not want to disappoint.  Just in case you need a helping hand, here are a few tips on the types of decorations you should get to create that spooky atmosphere for your home.

Buy a Skeleton or Skelton Bones

If you want to recreate a terrifying atmosphere in and around your home, then a skeleton is sure to induce fear into anyone who comes a visiting.  You can choose to use a full size model and have it standing at the front door to greet your guests or you can actually buy packets of loose bones made out of plastic, which you can then place in different locations.  Some bones can look really authentic which will add an extra special dimension to your spooky party.

Add Cobwebs Everywhere

A ghostly house needs to look like it has been unlived in and you can achieve this by placing cobwebs around the room.  You can either use a white netting that you can drape over your furniture or you can buy cans of cobweb spray.  This product works really well because it looks like the real thing and will last as long as the party lasts.  It is also very easy to remove so you do not have to worry about creating too much of a mess regardless of how much you use so just go to town and cover every surface.

Don’t Forget the Witch and Her Black Cat

The image of the witch and her black cat is a central figure of Halloween and you should definitely make sure to incorporate this in your Halloween decorations.  You can buy large puppets that you can hang from the ceiling so that it looks like a witch has decided to pay a flying visit to your home.  Alternatively you can get decals that you can stick to your windows and doors.  There are some excellent images that you can find either in your local mall or by looking online.  If you can’t get a witch puppet or figure for your party, then you could at least think about buying or even making your own witch like broomstick.  Rest it against the wall and ask your guests to look out for the witch who forgot their broomstick.broomstick

Creating a Halloween atmosphere for your home can be a fun activity for the whole family to share.  You can choose to go crazy and buy lots of accessories or you can make a lot of your own decorations  Whatever you decide, you are sure to have a fantastic Halloween.Halloween

Halloween Decorations with Pumpkins and Spiders

Halloween is approaching and it is time to start thinking about ways to decorate your home. Two items that can not be forgotten during this holiday season has to be the pumpkin and scary spiders.

Making Decorations with Pumpkins

A Halloween party would not be complete without at least one big orange pumpkin. You can purchase these in all shapes and sizes and once you have scraped out all the pulp from the inside, you have a perfect container to place a large candle. You can choose to carve a whole host of designs into the front of your pumpkins. The most popular design is usually a frightening looking face with big eyes and a jagged looking mouth.

The great thing is that you do not have to be particularly skilled in order to carve a design into the front of a pumpkin. This would also make a fantastic activity that you could share with your children. You can keep them fully entertained if you get them to draw a simple design, which can then be transferred onto their own pumpkin.

If you are worried about using candles and having a live flame near the children, you can buy very cheap LED lights that will illuminate their pumpkins without any fear of danger or accidents.

Adding Scary Spiders

There is nothing more terrifying than spiders. People who are scared of them will jump out of their skin to try and escape from them. If you enjoy seeing such terror in the eyes of your guests then you can sprinkle plastic spiders all around your home and just listen out for the screams. Your friends and family are sure to see the funny side once they have calmed down and realized than your spiders are not real.

You can also make your own gigantic spider by using black plastic bags. Create the shape of the head and the body by filling one black bag with paper or smaller bags and then simply cut more black bags into long strips to use for the legs. Then you just need to attach each strip to the body. You can choose to hang your DIY spider from a picture hook or you can place is on a table and make it a real focal point.

Creating the perfect atmosphere for your Halloween party may take a little bit of time and effort but the end results will most certainly be worth it. Whether you are holding a fancy dress party in your home for adults or for children get into the party mood and have a Happy Halloween.

Fun Facts About Halloween

5 Fun Facts About Halloween

Halloween is the second most popular holiday celebrated around the world after Christmas. It is now a huge commercial event with many companies making their best sales during this period.

Every year we celebrate Halloween on 31st October by getting dressed up in fancy dress costumes, sending the children out trick or treating and holding a whole host of fantastically themed parties featuring ghosts, ghouls and witches. Some people may have forgotten the true story behind Halloween. Here are some fun facts about the origins of this particular event and why we celebrate it.

What Does Halloween Mean?

Halloween is actually short for Hallows Eve or Hallows Evening. It was a Celtic event which actually celebrated the end of the Pagan year. Even though it was a time of celebration, there was a fear and belief that the spirits of the dead would rise on this evening and cause widespread panic and mayhem.

Why Do We Wear Costumes?

This is also linked with the traditions of the Pagan holidays. It was believed that the prosperity of the new season could be affected due to the appearance of the evil spirits.

People were scared so they would disguise themselves in different types of costumes in order to prevent any evil spirits from being able to recognise them as being human.

What Is the Importance of Bobbing For Apples?

During this period of time, apples were considered very sacred and it was a tradition to honour Pomona, who is the Goddess of fruitful abundance. The origin of the game of bobbing for apples dates from this time. This is where apples are placed in a container of water and people have to try and pick one up without using their hands. It is a very messy but hilarious activity that can be enjoyed by children as well as adults.

What Is the Significance of the Colours Orange and Black?

You may have noticed that the colours used in the majority of Halloween decorations and clothing tend to be predominately orange and black. This is because way back in history orange represented harvest while the colour black represented death and darkness.

Why Do We Carve Pumpkins?

During the Hallows Eve, candles would be placed in hollowed out turnips and used to ward off evil spirits that were thought to have risen from the dead. These were called Jack o’ Lanterns. When Immigrants arrived in America they continued to celebrate this date and pumpkins became the vegetable of choice. This was because they were more readily available and as they were larger than the average turnip, they were also easier to carve.

These days’ people create amazing designs using pumpkins, gourds and other types of vegetables. Candles are still used but many people prefer the safety of LED lights especially if they have small children.
